What does your name mean and why did your parents choose it for you?
Submitted by mommy2two.
When my father went to register for my social security number when I was six months old, the lady behind the plexiglass looked at my name and said to him, there in 1980 in the middle of Ohio, "Is your wife black?" I guess the implication being that African-Americans were more apt to name their children something as bizarre as Aarika than Caucasian folks and as my father is boringly pale, it had to be some Nubian goddess that he had tucked away at home. Of course, now we're living in the time of Pilot Inspektor and Jermajesty so people of all races and creeds can screw up their children's lives by making their names impossible to take seriously. Huzzah!
I don't know that my name means anything but when people ask if it's Scandinavian, I guess I could probably say that it is by spelling but not by design. I was named Aarika because my older brother is Aaron and my parents, as the story goes, were watching a local beauty pageant on television and one of the women was being said as "Erica" but spelled "Aarika" and there it was. If I'd been a boy, I would be Aarik and I paved the way for my younger sister who rounds out the bottom of our batting order of double-A names - Aalison.
What are three things you want to learn, and three things you can teach others to do?
Submitted by bookishbiker.
To learn: the names and works of major composers, the names and works of major artists and the location of the perfect messenger bag.
To teach: how to speak backwards, how to stun and amaze your friends with your trivial knowledge of B-list celebrities and how to charm the hell out of all men in the six months-to-ten years and sixty-to-seventy years age categories.
What are your favorite weird food combinations?
Submitted by Dulce.
The most expensive vanilla ice cream combined with the cheapest saltine crackers equals deliciousness in a bowl. You have to just throw the crackers right on top of the ice cream and then crack them apart (hey, "crack" the "crackers," I just got that!) and then the salt and the crackers filter down and meld with the ice cream to form a taste that, when it hits my tongue, reminds me of both chocolate-covered pretzels - because of the sweet/salt - and my childhood - because my maternal grandmother was the one who taught me to do this.
What do you do to ensure you get a good night's sleep?
Submitted by Jacob's Ladder.
Ha ha ha ha ha....ha. No, but seriously, Vox.
I guess I read before bed and that helps me drift off to sleep faster. But then I was reading Lisey's Story last week and fell asleep in the middle of an unresolved tense part and woke up in a cold sweat, sitting up in bed. I've never done this before and I am suing Stephen King, post-haste.
I make sure that I get to bed no earlier than seven p.m. and no later than five in the morning. That usually helps. Except not at all because I have zero consistency when it comes to my sleep cycle.
I suppose the only thing that really helps is three glasses of water, a vitamin C caplet and getting to bed at exactly 9:45 in the evening. How often does this happen? Hardly ever. But at least I know what might work.
Have you ever secretly unwrapped a gift before the big day?
Submitted by Red Pen.
Not that I can recall, honestly. But, last night, a friend of mine unwrapped-then-rewrapped the Wii that his mother got him for Christmas. And, let me just say this: it was...Wii-diculously fun.
(Cue eleven thousand Wii-related words all night long. As well as the obligatory, "Do you want to play with my Wii? I've been playing with it for days and I can't get enough of it!" and "Why is your Wii so small?" and, my favorite, "Why is your Wii always on its side like that?" with the response: "Okay, I'll let my Wii lie flat on the ground. But only for you.")
What are your top 5 movies/DVDs of 2006?
I'm just going to go with the top 5 movies that I saw in the theatre and not all the movies that I saw this year that I should have seen a year (Munich, so good yet so sad!) or years (The Pianist, so good yet so sad!) ago.
5. Mission: Impossible III - I was so focused on all the non-Tom Cruise actors that I don't even remember what sort of job Cruise did in this movie. Look over there, it's Keri Russell! And then Simon Pegg, over here, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. And then Philip Seymour Hoffman, kicking ass, as usual.
4. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - The best part of the whole Borat/Ali G phenomenon is the fact that Sacha Baron Cohen hires some great fricking camera people and editors. My favorite part of Borat was not just the fact that Cohen pushes everything right to the edge of the cultural cliff and then rides large naked men right over the edge of that cliff but also the part when they cut to the reactions of the people who witness what Borat does or says. It slays me because, yeah, me too, guys. He's crazy. Crazy genius weird.
3. The Departed - This movies was nothing like I thought it would be from the previews and trailers. And that's a very good thing for me and for Scorsese.
2. Inside Man - Ahhh, Clive Owen. You own my movie ticket dollars.
1. The Prestige - A very intense film but one that I would not watching a few more times so that I can attempt to understand what the hell is going on. Also, David Bowie!
Alternate film: Eragon - I haven't seen this movie yet but I'm going to see it this Friday and I'm currently reading the book and, thus, have great hopes that the movie will be AWESOME and HUGE and PRETTY.
What song gives you the most holiday cheer?
Submitted by Roxy.
To answer this question, I sat here and thought about what song most makes me realize that the holiday season is here. And then I started bouncing back and forth in my chair and singing, "Sim-ply. Hav-ing. Awonderfulchristmastime."
